Strategic Partners

about the issue:

The World Bank defines the extreme poverty line as living on less than $1.25 a day. In Sub-Saharan Africa the consumption is a meager 70 cents per day. It is estimated that 1.4 billion people in the developing world are living in extreme poverty*.

There is a shift occurring in our world. As our planet becomes less global expanse and more global village, as our communities become closer in proximity because of the internet, cell phones, and streaming media, we see, hear and experience the needs of others – in New Orleans, in Abruzzo, in Darfur.

The facts surrounding the issue of global hunger and poverty are sobering. And in the minds of many, solving these issues may seem to be an impossible task

However, at the Millennium Summit in September 2000 the largest gathering of world leaders in history adopted the UN Millennium Declaration, committing their nations to a new global partnership to reduce extreme poverty and setting out a series of time-bound targets, with a deadline of 2015. These goals have become known as the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).*
